If you follow the Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, or even the Larry King Live show, you may have noticed they all recently did a show featuring a DVD called, The Secret. This evening, I just finished watching it online and have to say that it was well worth the 90 minutes. It is a well-produced movie in its own right, but the message of the movie is what’s really compelling. The underlying secret, which forms the basis of this movie, is the Law of Attraction. If you’ve never heard of the Law of Attraction, it’s basically the idea that we attract into our lives that which we dominantly think about. In this post I will be describing how this law works, using some of the key points made in the film.

The Law of Attraction asserts that our thoughts become things. In a way, our thoughts can be compared to frequencies, sending out signals and attracting back to us exactly what we are focusing on. If we are focusing on what’s negative in our lives, more of that will continue to manifest in our lives. Just the same, if it’s the good that we are observing, then more of the good will come. Our thoughts then, become part of the creation process of our lives.

What you think and what you feel and what manifests is always a match

This tells us that what we have right now in our lives is a direct result of what we had previously thought and felt about. According to proponents of the Law of Attraction, there is always a match between these things. For example, if you are presently in a bad relationship, unhealthy, or lack wealth, the reason why you are that way, has to do with what you have focused on in the past. It’s not what we are thinking about right now that determines our present, but what we had thought about before.

Like Buddha said, “All that we are is the result of what we have thought.”

Whatever it is that you are feeling, is a perfect reflection of what is in the process of becoming

This is where we get into the concept of resonating with what you want. To explain this, let’s take the example of a tuning fork and a guitar string. When you strike a tuning fork and place it on a guitar, if a specific string is tuned to the same frequency as the tuning fork, it will automatically begin to vibrate. All other strings end up ignoring the tuning fork. The same thing is true with what we want to become.

We need to tune ourselves so that we can resonate with the “frequency” of that which we want to become. If it’s wealth that you want, then you need to be resonating as a wealthy person would be resonating. Essentially, think to yourself how a wealthy person would be walking right now, what they’d be talking about, etc. How would they be holding themselves? What is their overall phrasing? How would they look at things, and what would their mindset be? When you can begin to tune your mind, your actions, your very being to the frequency of how you want to be, then you will begin to resonate with that intention and it will begin to manifest itself into your life.

Most people focus the majority of their thoughts in response to what they are observing

This is where we begin to enter into a cycle, a cycle that can be either negative or positive. If you’re observing what is, and you’re thinking about what is, then the Law of attraction will give you more of what is. And now that you’re receiving more of what is, and you observe what is, and then think about what is, again the law attraction gives you more of it. Are you beginning to see the cycle? This may be one reason which might explain why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

By observing the negative and focusing on it, we allow it to take root in our minds, and according to the Law of Attraction, we then continue to get more of the same back. On the flip side, when we start to notice what is wonderful in our lives, what the good things we have are, and begin to think about those things, the same law applies, and we get more of it back.

So understanding this, we can begin to shift what it is that we are observing, and start to focus our thoughts on what it is that we want and thereby begin to receive that which we desire most.

One of the commentators explained that most people look at their current situation in life and say, “This is what I am.” But instead we should be thinking, “This is what I was.” Again, as Buddha said, “All that we are is the result of what we have thought.” Or as the commentator put it, “You are the residual outcome of your past thoughts and actions”. Remember, by continuing to look at your current state of affairs and define yourself as such, you are further solidifying your future.

So how can we turn our life around? Here are some steps:

1. Gratitude

This is the most basic step that you can do to begin to turn your life around. Take a piece of paper and make a list of things that you’re grateful for. Then, at least once a day, focus your mind upon those things. It could be your child, or perhaps a pet. Maybe it’s your health, your job, or your friend. It could be something as simple as your freedom.

What this does is, it puts your focus and attention outside of what you don’t want (which is what you used to focus on) and allow yourself to attract those things that you do want.

2. Desire

After doing the above exercise for a while, you may have already begun to see more of those things that you’ve been focusing on, being attracted into your life. Congratulations, you’ve made the first step! Do you now see how the Law of Attraction can work in your life?

So with this new knowledge, it’s time to stretch your boundaries a little. Now I want you to visualize what it is that you desire. What is it that you want, that you do not yet have in your life? Now take those desires and every day begin to focus on them in your thoughts, in your words, and in your actions.

As you do this, you will begin to resonate as someone who already has this desire manifested in their life. This will set in motion something much higher than yourself, and you will begin to see an answer from this Higher Power. It may come in the form of that which you desired, or may be something that will get you closer to your aim.

It is important that you realize this; That the answer will not always be a complete manifestation of exactly what you have thought of, but instead might be the knowledge you need or an opportunity that gets you closer to your goal. Be aware of these “coincidents”.

The secret does not contain any new information that hasn’t already been written or spoken about regarding the Law of attraction. But it does present it in a way that is both easy to understand and entertaining.

I definitely recommend seeing the movie. If you don’t want to own the DVD, you can go to their website and watch it for five dollars per viewing session. You’re allowed to pause it so that you can take notes, but after you have seen it once you, you can’t replay the same feed.
