This week, Life Training Online is reviewing The Science of Getting Rich: Attracting Financial Success through Creative Thought, by Wallace D. Wattles, the twenty-fourth of fifty-two books in the 52 Personal Development Books in 52 Weeks series.
“There is a science of getting rich. It is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches. Once a person learns and obeys these laws, he will get rich with mathematical certainty.”
The Right to be Rich
Wattles begins the book with making the case for being rich. We all need money to develop and grow and desiring riches is nothing more than the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life. That is why, according to Wattles, understanding the science of getting rich is the most important knowledge of all.
There are three motives for which we live: our bodies, our mind and our soul. Living for one and neglecting the others causes imbalance in life and leads to unhappiness. Riches give us the opportunity to grow in all these areas.
There is a Science of Getting Rich
Becoming rich is not primarily a matter of one’s environment, upbringing, or intelligence. It’s often that you see one person who’s become incredibly successful while another is poor within the same vocation. We also see the same within families. Despite the same upbringing, some members of the family will become wealthy while others are struggling to get by. Even intelligence or talent doesn’t always play a role. There are many examples of intelligent, talented people who are struggling to make ends meet while others with less prowess succeed.
So if environment, upbringing, talents, or intelligence aren’t what makes someone become rich, what then? Wattles says it really comes down to following an exact science. When you do follow it — knowingly or unknowingly — you will achieve riches, when you don’t, forget about it. It’s as simple as that. The ‘science’ behind becoming rich is you doing something in a very specific way. I’ll talk about what this ‘way’ is a little later on.
Is Opportunity Monopolized?
Too many of us look at others thinking, “man, they got into the right thing at the right time. It’s too late for me now.” While opportunities do come and go, opportunity itself is not monopolized. There are plenty of opportunities where riches can be made.
For example, at the time this book was written, the author had no idea of the internet. This is a huge opportunity for wealth for all people. It’s a great equalizer, allowing you to set up shop without the huge investment that a brick-and-mortar store requires. Even writing about things you’re passionate about (ie blogging) can be lucrative. This is hardly a full-time gig for me, but at the time of this writing I’m making around $100/day ($3000/mo) from this site alone.
No one is held in poverty by a shortness in supply of riches. This is an abundant universe and wealth is open to all.
The First Principle in the Science of Getting Rich
This principle may be a stretch for some of you, but take it with an open mind.
Wattles believes that there is a substance from which all things are made — a substance which, in its original state, is in and through all things in the universe. And thought is the only thing which can produce tangible riches from this Substance or anything else you wish to have. By concentrating your thoughts, you’ll be able to produce what you think about from this substance.
As Buddha says, “All that we are is the result of what we have thought.” You are the direct result of what you were thinking about. With that in mind, the key is to learn to maintain your end goal in your mind despite your external ‘reality’ telling you otherwise. This requires far more effort than thinking about what you observe. In other words, don’t think about how things are. Instead, think about how you want things to be. By doing this, you activate ‘Formless Substance’ to create your intended reality. This is the Law of Attraction in a nutshell.
Wattles explains that if there truly is a God, a Creator, or a Source of all things, than it should be easy to assume that this Source desires that your life be a full life with growth and expansion. If this truly is an abundant universe then this abundance should be available to all it’s creations. Life is about expansion and growth and becoming rich allows us the full measure of opportunity for expansion and growth.
How Riches Come to You
The way to riches is to provide greater ‘use value’ for your product or service compared to the cash it’s worth. For example, if I were to sell you an educational course for $250 but from that course you could learn how to potentially make thousands, then I’ve provided a greater ‘use value.’ Even with employees, your business would not succeed if you didn’t take more cash value from their labors compared to what you pay them, but you can provide more value to their wages by offering opportunities for advancement and growth.
Wattles also stresses that just because you are accessing ‘Formless Substance’ through your thoughts does not mean that riches will simply appear out of nowhere. Instead, it will be brought to you through the power of Supreme Intelligence acting upon the minds of others.
When you have a desire in your mind and you dwell upon that thought or desire, you are activating Formless Substance causing the Universe to begin to move toward providing that desire. It is important that in order for this to work, you must be in harmony with this infinite intelligence. The whole process of doing this can be best described with the word gratitude. First you believe that there is one Intelligent Source from which everything is created, second you believe that this Intelligent Source is what grants your desires; and third, you relate to this Source by a deep and profound feeling of gratitude.
The more ‘gratefully’ we fix our mind upon the Supreme when good things come to us, the more these good things we’ll receive, and the more rapidly they’ll come. Gratitude draws our mind closer to the source from which all our blessings come.
Thinking in the Certain Way
It’s not enough to have a general desire of what you want. This has no power to positively effect the Formless Substance to begin putting into motion your desires. Instead, you must have a clear picture in our mind’s eye of exactly what you want and continually dwell upon that picture.
Obviously this has to be something you really want. Without really wanting what it is that you are envisioning, you’ll never have the energy to hold the image of what you ‘desire’ in your mind.
