Viewing Intention from a New Perspective
In his more recent works as a writer, Dyer has made a shift in his thinking from a purely psychological or personal-growth emphasis (i.e. Your Erroneous Zones) toward a more spiritual orientation emphasising healing, creating miracles, manifesting, and making a connection to divine intelligence as genuine possibilities.
With this new focus on finding spiritual solutions to our problems, Dyer uses this chapter to frame this book’s discussion around what he considers intent to be — not so much a “pit-bulled” kind of determinationn we tend to think of — but “an immeasureable, indescribable force which…everything in the entire cosmos is attached to.” And when we learn to access this force, it relieves the seemingly impossible work of striving to fulfill desires by sheer force of will.
The Seven Faces of Intention
Intention, Dyer believes, is something we can literally feel, connect with, know, and trust. It’s something we inately feel but cannot really describe in words. Like electricity, we may not be able to see it, but it’s effects are easy to recognize. It’s these effects — or Seven Faces which Dyer describes them as — that help us to recognize the existence of intention:
- The face of creativity: The power of intention must be creative. The very fact that we can experience life all around us indicates that the nature of the Source is creative at its core.
As we tap into this power we become co-creators with intention to improve our lives and the lives of those around us.
- The face of kindness: By deducing from the opposite, Dyer explains that if intention’s core desire was to be unkind, hurtful, or malevolent, then creation itself would be impossible. Then by virtue of the opposite, intention must be kind.
When we become unkind, we lose contact with intention and block its power in our lives. It’s kind thoughts and actions which strengthen our connection with intention.
- The face of love: Love seems like the best definition we have for a power that encourages, enhances, creates, and supports all life.
When we become out of alignment with the energy of love, we move away from intention. For example, if you’re not doing what you love and loving what it is you’re doing, then you weaken your ability to activate the power of intention in your life.
- The face of beauty: It seems obvious that a creative, kind, and loving force couldn’t be anything but beautiful. For why would this intelligence ever decide to manifest into form anything that would be repugnant to itself? Intention therefore, must be beautiful.
By becoming sensitive to seeing and feeling beauty around you, you align yourself to the creative power of intention within everything around you, including yourself.
- The face of expansion: One of the basic tenants of life is to seek more and more expression. We see clear proof of this in our physical world. We must then conclude that the source of all life is also always expanding.
Becoming connected with the power of intention gives you the ability to expand all aspects of your life.
- The face of unlimited abundance: If this force has no boundaries, and is constantly creating and expanding, it must then be endlessly abundant.
Understand that you — as a part of intention — share everything it has. Because intention knows no limits in abundance, you are entitled to have unlimited abundance as part of your life as well.
- The face of receptivity: No one or no one thing is rejected by intention. It invites all and every thing without judgement.
To fully connect with this power, you must be equally receptive to it. Not only do you need to open yourself up to the guidance which comes, but you must be receptive to giving this energy back to the world.
Connecting To Intention
You’re probably wondering how you exactly go about connecting to this power. The key lies in embodying the Seven Faces of Intention in your own life. As you express yourself as intention expresses itself, you harmonize and thus connect with intention.
Once aligned, you now have the ability to co-create with intention anything you desire in life. Dyer says, “The way to establish a relationship with Spirit and access the power of this creating principle is to continuously contemplate yourself as being surrounded by the conditions you wish to produce.”
By maintaining this kind of personal intent, you allow the power of intention to provide the form and conditions of your aim’s manifestation. And as long as you can sustain that intent, you will be connected to the power of intention.
Obstacles to Connecting to Intention
There are three areas which act as stumbling blocks that prevent you from connecting with intention. They are: your inner speech, your level of energy and your self importance. Let’s briefly take a look at them.
- Your Inner Speech
Since the time of the Old Testament, we can find reminders about the importance of monitoring our inner dialogue. For example, “as a man thinketh, so is he.” Those wise teachers of ages past knew the power our thoughts have in shaping our existence. By thinking about what’s missing in your life, or what has always been, you will continue to manifest your current situation. It’s not until you start to align your thoughts with intention — focusing on what you want — will your circumstances change.
- Your Level of Energy
According to Dyer, our thoughts carry energy. Every thought has an energy that will either strengthen you or weaken you. In addition, who and what we surround ourselves with can also increase or decrease our energy. For example, if we surround ourselves with people who vibrate at a lower energy, and we’re not monitoring where our energy level is (where our thoughts are), we can end up matching our level of energy with them. But by keeping your thoughts on a higher plane, your higher level of energy will raise their’s in turn.
Ultimately, you must learn that in order to remove lower energy obstacles, you must raise your level of energy to where you are the light you seek, you are the happiness you desire, you are the love you feel is missing, where you are the unlimited abundance you crave
- Your Self Importance
Our feelings of self-importance is our greatest enemy. It’s what allows us to become offended. It’s what makes us identify ourselves as our body, our achievements, or our possessions. When we have more, we feel superior and when less we feel inferior. When the self becomes the focal point of our existence, we completely separate ourselves from the power of intention. “Ego is simply an idea of who you are that you carry around with you. Here are seven steps to overcoming ego’s hold on you:
- Stop being offended
- Let go of your need to win
- Let go of your need to be right
- Let go of your need to be superior
- Let go of your need to have more
- Let go of identifying yourself on the basis of your achievements
- Let go of your reputation
Your Impact on Others When Connected to Intention
As you find yourself becoming aligned with the seven faces of intention, you’ll begin to discover that you’re having a major impact on others in new ways you’ve never before seen. It’s in this chapter that Dyer introduces the concept of the “holy relationship.”
The ability to see yourself as part of the Source of the universe and see yourself in all others is a characteristic of the holy relationship. However, if we let ego direct our lives — seeing ourselves as separate from every thing and everyone — and we use people primarily to satisfy ego’s urges, we’re living an unholy relationship.
By connecting to intention, you’ll sense a major difference in how others react to you. They’ll be drawn to you, bringing peace, love, beauty, and abundance into your life. Your presence will instill a sense of calmness and leave others feeling energized and better about themselves. Your presence will instill a sense of purpose and allow others to trust you.
Become cognizant of the impact you have on others. And keep in mind that by raising your level of energy (your thoughts and actions) to be in harmony with intention, you become an instrument for good in this life.
Intention and Infinity
We exist in an infinite universe without beginning or end. If that is life and life is eternal, then our bodies and all of its achievements and possessions — which begins and ends in dust — cannot be life itself. This shift toward seeing yourself as an infinite being having a human experience rather than a human being having occasional spiritual experiences takes some mental shifting. But when you can accept that, Dyer says, the result will be a permanent connection to the power of intention.
