There is one road in the journey of life where there is not much competition. It’s never overcrowded and you need not worry about stepping on any toes in order to rise above the crowd here. But if you regularly travel down this road, I promise you that sooner or later you’ll achieve incredible success in whatever endeavor you choose to pursue.

The road I’m referring to is the Extra Mile.

If you are willing to do more than you are paid to do, eventually you will be paid to do more than you do. – Anonymous

Like many people I’ve never been a big fan of going to the dentist. Recently, however, I actually enjoy going for my bi-annual cleaning and checkup — and it all has to do with the dentist going the extra mile.

The office is not only comfortable, but it’s immaculately decorated, has free coffee, hot cocoa, tea and snacks in the lobby for those waiting for their appointments. The staff is extremely professional and pleasant, and they truly make you feel at home and comfortable. Best of all, while you’re being worked on or cleaned, the dentist provides Video Headsets with a huge selection of movies which makes the time pass enjoyably and quickly.

Are any of these ‘extras’ necessary to run a dentist’s office? Of course not. But by exceeding expectations they have clients who travel from miles away just to see the dentist in my little town in central Massachusetts. Going the extra mile pays off.

If your focus is exclusively on your own needs then you may think that giving more of yourself is just not fair. After all, why should you give more of yourself if you’re not getting compensated or rewarded for it? But be assured that with time your effort will not go unnoticed. Whether it’s in your career, your relationships, or your business, going the extra mile will skyrocket your reputation and lead to lifelong success.
